Muncaster Castle

With 77 acres of gardens and woodland, and within walking distance of The Grove, The Old Wine Store and the Walled Garden Glamping, Muncaster Castle hosts activities throughout the year. The castle as we see it today was commissioned by the fourth Lord Muncaster in 1885 and executed by the famous architect Anthony Salvin.

  • The La'al Ratty

    The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England, known locally as 'La'al Ratty', which means 'little railway' in the old Cumbrian dialect. The line was originally built in 1873. It is within walking distance of The Grove, The Old Wine Store and the Walled Garden Glamping.

    The Roman Bath House

    The remains of the bath house of Ravenglass Roman fort, established in AD 130, are among the tallest Roman structures surviving in northern Britain, with walls standing almost four metres high. There is evidence that soldiers stationed here served in Hadrian's fleet. Within walking distance of The Grove, The Old Wine Store and the pods.

  • Eskdale Mill

    A rare survival of a traditional watermill and drying kiln, and the last remaining working water-powered corn mill in the Lake District National Park. The mill sits among an intimate huddle of buildings on the north side of the fast-flowing Whillan Beck, where it meets the moorland at the edge of Boot.

    Stanley Ghyll waterfall

    Stanley Ghyll Waterfall

    A lovely walk up Stanley Ghyll leads to one of the most beautiful Lakeland waterfalls. The vegetation here is so lush in summer that it seems almost tropical. Start at the parking area near the Dalegarth terminus of the Eskdale railway and follow the waymarked trail through pleasant woodland to the banks of the Ghyll.

  • Hardknott Roman Fort

    This remote and dramatically sited fort was founded under Hadrian's rule in the 2nd century. Well-marked remains include the headquarters building, commandant's house and bath house. The parade ground survives beside the fort, and the road it guarded can be traced for some distance as an earthwork.

    The beaches around Ravenglass are a sight to behold and are excellent hotspots on a summer day. Come out for the sun or to enjoy a soak, and make the most of the many idyllic beachfront cafes.

    Based just off the Main Street in the heart of the village, this local shop is the ideal place for a refreshing stop-off on a day out. As well as luscious handmade ice cream they offer options suitable for vegans, along with cakes, milk, bread, breakfast boxes and doggy ice cream, a treat for all your four-legged friends.

    For those not so sunny days, enjoy one of their fresh filter coffees or hot chocolates, or choose from their selection of sausage rolls and Cornish pasties. The shop is just off the village green, the perfect base for watching the world go by.
